An attractive imitation of fine style
Lot 1895
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Pseudo-Imperial coinage. Early 3rd to mid 4th centuries. Denarius (Silver, 17 mm, 3.11 g, 6 h), Taman Peninsula. Stage 1, imitating Marcus Aurelius (161-180). AN[...]INVS A[...] ARMENIACVS Laureate head of Marcus Aurelius to right. Rev. [...] IIII COS III Salus standing front, head to left left, feeding serpent, rising from altar, out of patera with her right hand and holding rudder (sic!) in her left. Sergeev -, cf. 280 ff. Very fine.

This is a very early imitation of good style and with clearly legible legends, but the Germanic artist apparently misinterpreted Salus' scepter as a rudder
